Local authorities of government who attended a National Conference for Community Radio Stations across the country has pledged to support the work of rural radio stations so as to enhance their operations.
About 40 Community Radio stations managers, Board of Directors and County Superintendents converged on the City of Ganta, Nimba County.
At the end of the conference, a consensus on the role of community radios was fashioned. In a two-paged resolution, they agreed to consolidate peace by promoting reconciliation and fostering national development.
They agreed to provide moral and financial support to community radios in their respective localities from the county resources.
According to the resolution, the radios will develop a code of conducts and editorial policies to guide their operations in consultations with their boards of directors. At the same time, the community radio managers resolved to uphold professionalism and ethical standards in the discharge of their duties.
The conference came at the time of increasing reports of interference by some local county authorities in the operations and management of community radios on the one hand, and the unethical reporting of some community radio workers on the other.
The conference was followed by a two-day workshop to sharpen the skills of community radio managers to report effectively and increase citizens’ understanding of major government reform polices such as the poverty Reduction Strategy, Security Sector Reform, the Anti-corruption Bill and the Government Commission, among others.
The National Conference was jointly organized by the Search for Common Ground/Talking drum Studio and the Association of Liberian Community Radios (ALICOR) with sponsorship from the Canadian Government and the British Department for International; development (DFID)
PLAN International Fights For Children’s Rights
The Chief Executive Officer for Plan International Mr. Tom Miller at the head of a two-man delegation has arrived in Liberia as guests of Plan Liberia. While in the country, Mr. Miller and delegation will visit some of Plan Liberia project areas and at the same time interact with Liberian children.
They already held discussion with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on issues surrounding the growth and development of Liberian Children. Plan International boss also committed his institution support to the development of Liberian Children.
On June 16, Mr. Tom Miller, his wife Bonnie Miller, Plan West Africa Regional Director John Chaloner and Plan Liberia Country Director Augustine Allieu also joined hundreds of children in Bensonville and Vonzon Communities to celebrate the Day of the African child and to launch Plan and Nokia child rights media campaign project.
Launching the program, Mr. Tom Miller, challenged adults to ensure that children rights to all basis services including right to education, water and sanitation, health, participation are always respected by adults .Concluding Mr. Miller admonished adults to ensure children are always listened to so that their aspiration, problems and needs can be heard and addressed.
In separate remarks, the Superintended of Montserrado Hon. Barcon and the Representative of District Number Four Hon. Richards Holders, thanked Plan and Nokia for the creating the opportunities for children to be heard.
They committed their support to the project and called on Plan to work with the communities to put in place a mechanism for enhancing the sustainability of this worth wide initiative. Hundreds of children, local leaders and an array of government officials and Plan Staff witnessed the occasion. |
